Let’s clear something up straight away — zircon is not cubic zirconia.
People often mix them up because of the name, but they couldn’t be more different. Cubic zirconia (or CZ) is man-made — a synthetic stone created in a lab. Zircon, on the other hand, is 100% natural, formed deep within the Earth over millions of years.

Zircon is actually one of the oldest gemstones on the planet, with some crystals dating back over 4.4 billion years. The oldest of them have been found right here in Western Australia, in the Jack Hills, which makes this stone even more special to us.

Zircon’s sparkle can rival a diamond — it’s got incredible fire, brilliance, and depth of colour — but it’s far rarer. Sadly, it doesn’t get the attention it deserves because people mistake it for a cheap diamond substitute. Once you’ve seen a real zircon, though, you’ll never forget it. Some even show pleochroism, meaning they shift colour slightly depending on the angle you look at them — nature’s little magic trick.

In short, zircon is the real deal — ancient, rare, and full of life. It’s a gemstone with history, character, and Australian roots that run deep.

We are so excited to begin selling Australian gemstones, this is really the paddock to plate of the gold/gem/jewellery world in Australia. We noticed a huge gap in the Australian market, you could get Aussie gems but it was hard to find the provenance and story behind them, and there isn't many creating jewellery with their own gold, found by themselves in the Aussie outback and these gems. This is where the idea was born, a collection of jewellery including gems and gold that is found by the small timers of outback Australia, no big companies, no bullshit story about where the gems and gold comes from, from the Outback to your family forever. 

They were all found by small-time fossickers out on the gem fields of Queensland and the Northern Territory — the kind of people who spend their days out in the dirt chasing a flash of colour. Similar to us prospectors just with a different type of fever. 

All of the stones are cut by Darryl, a self-taught gem cutter and prospector from the NT. I actually met him and his wife after they posted in the Leonora Facebook page saying they had some gems to sell. We ended up meeting in a car park, and what started as a quick chat turned into me buying some of the best stones I’ve ever seen. I later spent two days in their caravan park, learning to cut alongside Darryl and seeing the time, patience, and love that goes into each stone.

Some of these gems will end up in our jewellery, and others are for sale just as they are — straight from the ground, hand-cut, and full of character.

These aren’t factory stones or mass-produced anything. No labs, no massive mine sites, very little environmental impact, no big companies, just Aussie's from the outback on the hunt for your next heirloom. They’re real Australian gems with real people and real places behind them — the kind you hold onto, pass down, and tell stories about.
